Brewer Family of Tyringham, New Milford, and Nichols (Trumbull), Connecticut

My mother was Jean (Hartley) Brewer. She lived 1931-2008. These Brewer-Marsh photos are
the oldest and best we have.

Brewer Ancestry

Electa (Langdon) Brewer (b. 1787)

This is the earliest Brewer photo we have. Marion (Bailey) Moore, Marion's sister Barbara Bailey, and I (Orrin C. Winton) have deduced that this is Electa (Langdon) Brewer (born 1787) wife of Daniel Brewer (b. 1784). The photo originally belonged to Electa's grandson Daniel Brewer (1862-1922). It then belonged to his wife Lottie (Marsh) Brewer (1860-1952) at 110 Shelton Road, Trumbull CT, until her death in 1952. That house was transferred to the Moore family some time in the 1950s, and the photo sat in the attic in a metal box until 1980 when Marion Moore gave it to Orrin.

Practical photography was not invented till 1839 by Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre, and early photos were daguerreotypes. This photo is not a daguerreotype; it was likely taken after 1850. Though unlabelled, it could not be the mother of Daniel Brewer (1862-1922) because by 1850 Daniel's parents (Eleazer and Lucy Julia [Judd] Brewer) were in their thirties and living in New Milford CT, not back in Great Barrington and Tyringham where our Brewers lived for over a hundred years. Notice the photo was taken in Great Barrington which is in Berkshire County, far-western Massachusetts. The photo also could not be Daniel's other grandmother Mary (Buel) Judd because she died before 1825, according to the research done by our deceased cousin Deborah (Brewer) Appleby of San Jose CA. So unless the photo is of a grand-aunt or some other family member, it is that of Electa (Langdon) Brewer born 1787, date of death after 1850.

We don't have any pictures of her son Eleazer Brewer (1816-1898)and Eleazer's wife Lucy Julia (Judd) Brewer (1818/20 - aft. 1898), but here is a picture of their house as it stood around 1900. Eleazer was a blacksmith and farmer.

The photo is labelled on the back and states that the house was for sale for $4000 by its owner Daniel Brewer (1860-1922). Marion (Bailey) Moore and Barbara Bailey state they believe it was owned by Daniel's parents Eleazer and Julia.

I keep referring to our great-grandfather Daniel Brewer (1862-1922). Well here is his picture as a young man in New Milford CT:

Daniel was a tobacco farmer. Here he is (ca. 1898) at about age 36 with his family: wife Lottie (Marsh) Brewer (1860-1952), twin daughters Edith and Edna, and young son Charles T. Brewer:

And here is Lottie E. Marsh (1860-1952) of Easton CT as a girl:

Here is their son Charles T. Brewer (1893-1979) as a young man, ca. 1920; our grandfather:

And here he is with his own family ca. 1931: wife Lillian (Hartley) Brewer (1900-1977), older daughter Betty, and the twins Jean and Robert (b. 1931). The house is at 118 Shelton Road, right next door to 110/112 Shelton Road where Lottie and Edna were living.

Jean (Brewer) Winton (1931-2008) is the mother of Orrin C., Laurie J., and Gary J. Winton (not shown here).
